DARWIN Rugby League has gone back to the future with the announcement last night that next season's competition matches will be played on Sundays.

In a move sure to create a tidal wave of responses from the Top End league community, every A and reserve grade game will changefrom the current Saturday format.

While the decision may be considered a radical move, for many years Sunday football was a fixture of the DRL calendar.

Northern Territory Rugby League general manager Gary Launt last night explained there were a number of key reasons behind the day change.

"Sunday's have always been a day for rugby league," Launt said.

"The move brings us in harmony  with down south and help in a number of areas such as juniors, general scheduling and of course our profile as the number one football code in the dry season."

Certainly the fact players will not be able to use Sunday as a recovery day means the decision will not be universally popular, something Launt understands.

"I know it's a decision that hasn't been entirely supported by our clubs, but I believe it is a decision which is exciting and will generate new interest in the sport," he said.

"I think our players should handle the change well, players down south certainly do and our players are no different to them."

The decision also has a major flow-on boost to the ever-growing Darwin Junior Rugby League competition with all games returning to Ludmilla in 2008.

"We wanted all our juniors to be back at Richardson Park where they belong," he said.

"We'll have our juniors on Friday night and Saturday and allow the big boys the opportunity to shine on Sunday."

While final details of a program schedule have yet to be finalised, it is understood Launt would like the match of the round to be played at 5pm, resulting in an approximate 7.30pm finish.

"We want people to come back to rugby league, have a good day out and head home at a time that suits them. I don't think after 10.30 is that time," he said.

To cope with the increase in use, Richardson Park has been the beneficiary of a $12,000 grant provided by Palmerston Hub to upgrade the current irrigation system.
